The Alemanni (meaning 'all men') were an alliance of war bands part of the Suebian confederation situated around the Baltic Sea during the 1st century AD. They soon begun migrating southwards and by the start of the 3rd century they occupied what is now Central and South-Western Germany, Northern Switzerland and the Alsace region. When they requested help from Rome, Emperor Antoninus tried to take advantage of the situation and fighting broke out in 213. The Alemanni lost that encounter but this turn them into implacable adversaries of Rome.
